Biography of H.E. Dr.  Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat

H.E. Dr.  Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat assumed the responsibility of Ambassador of Nepal to Malaysia in November 2013. H.E. Dr. Basnyat is also Non-resident Ambassador of Nepal to Indonesia and the Philippines during his ambassadorial tenure in Malaysia.

Ph. D. in International Relations and Diplomacy from France, H.E. Dr. Basnyat has extensive diplomatic experience of three decades.

After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal as Officer in 1986, H.E. Dr. Basnyat sincerely and dedicatedly strived to foster Nepal’s interest and image in the international arena throughout his career in the Foreign Ministry. He started his first foreign posting as First Secretary in the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations, New York from February 1993 till July 1997, and during the same period he also held the responsibility of Acting Consul General in New York.

H.E. Dr. Basnyat was appointed as Consul of Nepal at the Consulate General in Hong Kong from August 2000 until his promotion to Under Secretary in 2002. He held the post of Charge d’Affaires a.i. twice at the Nepalese Embassy in Paris from April 2003 to September and June 2006 to March 2007. He briefly worked as Acting Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the period of May 2008 to Oct. 2008. On Aug 2009, he was appointed at the  SAARC Secretariat, Kathmandu as the Director from Nepal and worked there till  April 2012. He was promoted to Joint Secretary at the Foreign Ministry in the same year, and shortly afterwards appointed as Chief of Protocol in April 2012.

As Member of Nepalese delegations, he   attended several meetings and conferences including UNGA, NAM, NPT Extension Conference, World Summit on Social Development (Copenhagen 1995) and SAARC Summits.

H.E. Dr. Basnyat is honoured with prestigious awards like Nepal Vidhya Bhushan ‘A’ by the Right Honourable President of Nepal in 2010 and Gorkha Dakshin Bahu IV in 1994.  Fluent in English, French, Spanish and Hindi languages, H.E. Dr. Basnyat is fond of Swimming, playing table tennis, reading and listening to music.

Born on 25 July 1955, H.E. Dr. Basnyat is Married to Mrs. Renu Basnyat and has two children.
